Climate Crisis – Copenhagen Summit December 2009
We are sadly at the point in our history where changes in the climate are not noted only behind laboratory doors. The crisis is real and there is not one person who is unaware of the dramatic climatic changes as of late. These changes have a monumental effect on our own survival as a species. Typically, when the environment changes naturally, natural selection occurs. This means that, through time, genes which are advantageous for the organism in the new environment will get passed on to the next generation.
For several reasons, natural selection is not an option. The climatic changes are now occuring dramatically fast. There is no time to naturally adapt. Even if we “waited” for generation upon generation of human to become more adapted to the new environment, I truly doubt we could survive. Unless there is intelligent and speedy intervention, I see extinction, cold as the word is, inevitable.
We have toxins in our food supply. Most of us are already aware of that threat and the consequences which are unfolding. Now there are even more threats to our food supply. The most pressing issue, in the moment, is that the dramatic climatic changes we are all noticing will, and are, having a catastrophic effect on the availability OF a food supply. Both farmers and their crops do not have the advantage of time to adapt. Some areas are experiencing severe drought, while others are having to deal with new tropic-like conditions. In the North Eastern region of he United States, there have been uncharacteristic daily thunder storms and massive amounts of rain. We, in this area, are already experiencing shortages of certain foods due to the emergence of food-competitive molds. There will be more to come unless, as a single community of mankind, our leaders work together to design and implement both short and long range measures to reverse the damage.
We CAN push the leaders of the world to take seriously the consequences of our irresponsible actions. There is a huge mess to clean. In our case, the expression “better late than never” might apply.
Normally, online petitions rarely reach their destination. This petition, directed to our world leaders, is organized by a very environmentally active organization called Greenpeace.
The goal is to ask the world leaders to attend, and take seriously, the Climate Crisis Summit that will take place in Copenhagen December 2009.
